Community Engagement

Working collaboratively with our community is one of the most important things that we do here at Wellington Town Council. As well as supporting the fantastic community groups that exist in Wellington, we have our own initiatives to engage with our residents.

Get in Touch

We believe that open communication is one of the most important things a local council can do. Your local Councillors are available to contact any time you like, but please note that they do not hold regular office hours. You can find out who your ward councillors are and their contact details here.

For any query you have, you can always contact us or pop in to see us at our reception at 30 Fore Street. We will always do our best to help and if we cannot we will direct you to a service that can.

Consultations

Local opinions are valuable to us. We will occasionally ask our residents for their views on plans and proposals and may seek inspiration from ideas suggested.

To stay up-to-date on our public consultations, we recommend that you sign up to our newsletter or follow us on Facebook. Official consultations will also be advertised via posters in our noticeboards and paper copies of forms can be made available upon request.

Ongoing Initiatives

Along with ad hoc consultations, we have regular initiatives that help us engage with our local population.

Out and About

You may have seen us out in the wild on occasion as we know how important it is for people to see their local councillors and feel that they can approach them for a chat. We have had a presence at events such as the Spring Fayre and Wacky Wednesday, providing information and a place for people to meet their councillors and discuss issues close to their heart. Any time you see the big red Wellington Town Council gazebo please feel free to come along and have a chat!

At these events we may even have our “How Good is Wellington?” place standard tool. Developed by the Scottish Government, this tool is an interactive sticker chart that helps us track how Wellington measures up over 14 headings.

Kings Arms Community Hub

We are working with partner organisations to set up a Community Hub in the heart of town in the old Kings Arms pub. Work has been slow over the past few years but the pace is now picking up and we hope to be able to open the venue in summer 2025.

Civic Award

The Civic Award is a scheme that has been run by the Town Council for over 10 years. This project invites year 5 pupils from local primary schools to participate in a mission of self-improvement throughout the school year through physical, mental, and social development. This is done through pupils logging time spent learning or developing skills and through projects completed independently and as part of a group.

Students who complete all the required hours of learning and complete their projects to a satisfactory standard (as determined by a checklist provided to their teacher) receive a certificate presented by the Mayor at the end of the school year. Stand-out portfolio folders are celebrated and the student with the best portfolio of the year is presented with a trophy.

Community Awards

In 2023 we established the Wellington Community Awards, four categories that recognise the best people that Wellington has to offer. The public can nominate whoever they wish (Previous award winners and standing councillors are not eligible). A panel of councillors will then evaluate the entries and choose a winner, taking into account the number of nominations for a person or organisation. The awards are presented at the Annual Council Meeting in May.
