TOWN COUNCIL ANNOUNCES 2025/26 PRECEPT

TOWN COUNCIL ANNOUNCES 2025/26 PRECEPT

At its meeting on Monday 6 January Wellington Town Council set its Precept for 2025/6.  The Precept is the proportion of the Council Tax that is paid to Somerset Council for services that are delivered by the Town Council.

In 2025 the Town Council will be taking on significant additional responsibilities as the majority of open spaces ion the town are transferred to its ownership and it also agreed back in December to set aside funding to protect services for the more vulnerable members of the community in light of Somerset Council’s ongoing financial difficulties.

As a result the Precept in 2025/6 will be increasing by just over 27%.  The table below shows the impact of this increase on households in the town.

A table with three columns: Band, Yearly Increase (£), and Weekly Increase (£). The rows read as follows:
A, 30.39, 0.58
B, 35.46, 0.68
C, 40.52, 0.78
D, 45.59, 0.88
E, 55.72, 1.07
F, 65.85, 1.27
G, 75.98, 1.46
H, 91.18, 1.75

For context 73% of households in Wellington are in Bands A-C.

Mayor Janet Lloyd said “We appreciate that any increase in the amount that people have to pay is difficult as other household bills are increasing too.  However, by taking on the ownership and management of the open spaces in the town and recruiting our own open spaces team, not only will we be able to deliver those services more cost effectively than alternative approaches, but also to a higher quality.  Also, by enhancing our support for the more vulnerable members of our community we can mitigate the reductions in service delivery and support from Somerset Council which will, in all likelihood, continue to reduce as it addresses its financial challenges.”
